Colonel Thorn and Cercle de l’Union

I just discovered that Colonel Thorn was a member of the Circle of Union club in Lyon. ( Cercle de l'Union), which in his day was known as Cercle du Divan.

He was mentioned along with:

M. Talbot, G. M. Talleyrand, Baron de Talbot, J. M. Talleyrand, Duc de Tarleton. Taylor, Général Temple Frencbe, Colonel Thorn, Colonel Townley, Lieut. Colonel Throckmorton, Sir Robert Tierney, D-Colonel M. E. Trauttmansdorff, Comte de Tyrwhitt

The first club was the Cercle du Divan (the Sofa Club) which had been set up on December 30th 1841. It was the club of the aristocracy and of the upper gentry of Lyon. Its main purpose was to offer its members a place for friendly get-togethers and its first president was the Marquis of Bellescize. It was then located quai de l’Arsenal in the city center; but in 1856 it was decided to move into a new building under construction 64 rue Imperiale. Later on, the Cercle du Divan was transferred to the present location of 27 Place Bellecour. Then, in 1917 it was renamed the Cercle d'Union. The architect who designed the final club building was Rene Ribollet and there seems to be some discrepancy between the address of the building. Some sources say it was 25 Place Bellecour and others say it was 27, which are of course side by side.
64 rue Imperiale is now 64 rue de la Republique
25 Place Bellecour
27 Place Bellecour

  1. Yes, that was a typo. Sorry. Have changed it. it seemed to only operate out of Lyon. Though how often he was there, I don’t know…
