The Golden Carriage

This one is a little gem: Thorn apparently being mistaken for royalty as he swanned about in Charles X’s carriage.

It is told of him that after the deposition of Charles X, he [Colonel Thorn] purchased the royal carriage, and the soldiers of Paris, in their ignorance, presented arms on its passing.

There’s no way to verify this story. It may be urban legend. Although there are many accounts of the fact that his “equipage and livery” surpassed all others. So it’s in keeping with all I have read.

Charles X had an unsuccessful 6 year reign and he was replaced by Louis Philippe. You can read a delightful account of his Kingship here.
